Phonics Fitness

Phonics Fitness is an innovative Early Years literacy programme developed by Simon McCullough to explore how kinesthetic movement can enhance phonics learning and retention. The concept emerged from Simon’s work as a Phonics Lead, where he began combining elements of established phonics programmes including Read Write Inc. (RWI), Jolly Phonics, and Letters & Sounds with structured physical movement activities. The aim was to transform phonics lessons into engaging, hands-on experiences that allow children to connect sound, movement, and memory. Through this approach, phonics instruction becomes active and dynamic, encouraging children to physically engage with sounds, words, and patterns rather than learning purely through traditional seated instruction. During this period, Simon launched a Phonics Fitness After School Club, which saw strong uptake from students and provided an opportunity to refine and test the programme in a practical classroom environment. The club played a key role in shaping the development of the methodology and activities now included within the programme. Phonics Fitness is designed to be used alongside established phonics frameworks, supporting programmes such as Read Write Inc., UFLI, and other structured literacy systems. The goal is not to replace core phonics instruction but to enhance engagement, reinforce memory, and deepen understanding through movement-based learning. The programme is currently in the final stages of development, with ongoing work focused on research validation, curriculum refinement, and the incorporation of evidence from cognitive science and educational research relating to movement and learning. Phonics Fitness reflects Simon’s broader philosophy that learning should be active, creative, and physically engaging, particularly in Early Years education where movement and play are fundamental to development.
